I love the U.S. Open. It’s the last bastion for serves and volleys in the baseline-obsessed “modern game” of tennis. Wimbledon is the French Open on grass. Players don’t even significantly modify their strokes to win it anymore and journeys to the net are as rare as Venus Williams wearing traditional tennis whites. If anything, the USTA needs to make the U.S. Open even faster, so that we preserve the aggressive, American brand of tennis made great on faster surfaces by the likes of Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, and Pistol Pete Sampras. Variety is the spice of life, and the U.S. Open is the last bit of true variety available to the world of Grand Slams!
