Daniel Kosakowski of UCLA notched his first ATP Tour-Level win on Tuesday Aug. 26th with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Tim Smyczek in the first round of the Farmer’s Classic at UCLA. The crowd definitely pushed for the former collegiate stand-out as he settled into the second set, fighting off the consistency of Smyczek. Kosakowski is a Huntington Park, California native although his name sounds like he was an import from Poland.
“It’s nice to see a young American win a tour match,” one spectator commented as Smyczek stood over the last shot, which he thought was out, and stared at the lines woman. At nineteen, he has potential, with a big forehand and a first serve that at times showed power and placement, but at other times did not hamper his opponent greatly.
Unfortunately, Kosakowski lost today to Ernst Gulbis, 6-2, 6-4, but hopefully he can build on this encouraging start to his tour-level playing career.
