Palm Desert Trip 2012

Mcc Members enjoyed the second of our annual trips Nov. 2-4, this time to Palm Desert for two interclubs and a club dinner.  Players arrived Friday evening, and a small group joined together at Fresh Agave for a delicious Mexican meal and margaritas, while Manuel played the harp.

On Saturday morning at 9am, we arrived at Ironwood Country Club, where Maureen played a mean joke on Gene, almost giving him a heart attack as the guard explained that the match had been canceled.  Gene stared up at the clear sky in confusion before he explained the prank!  Nice work, Ms. Hunt-Reinjohn!  As for the match, Marina City Club acquitted itself very well, winning every match against a strong club with 14 hard tennis courts and two lovely golf courses set against the picturesque San Jacinto Mountains.  Mike Levitt & Carlos Dunkerly won 6-2, 6-1, Gene & Larry Mortorff won 6-1, 6-4, Marva Baumgart & Margaretta Gentschein won 6-4, 6-4, Barb Fier & Maureen Hunt won 6-1, 6-0, Mike Fasch & Bill Baumgart won 6-3, 6-2, and Rick Shane & Stephen Hall won 6-1, 7-5.

Saturday night, we drove east on Highway 111 to The Nest for a four-course dinner at 6pm.  The meal was splendid, with filet mignon, fish, pork, and vegetarian dishes to choose from and ice cream and carrot cake for desert, everyone enjoyed good company, wine, and food.  Afterwards, some remained on the packed dance floor while others ventured into the night or went home to get some sleep in anticipation of our second match with Rancho Las Palmas the next morning.

Sunday, we gained an extra hour of sleep and it showed, as the Mcc’ers again played well, winning most matches in a round robin format under a blistering sun and 90 degree temperatures.  After three rounds of heated mixed doubles, most folks were ready to call it a day, get a bite, and hit the road back to LA.  A special thanks to Kevin, Regina, Donna, and Rick Shane, for allowing us to enjoy a last minute match at Rancho Las Palmas, one of the most beautiful tennis clubs in the country.  Next year, set aside the first weekend in November to join us for another fantastic trip to Palm Desert.
