2015 Mcc Men’s Doubles Tournament

We had a great Men’s Doubles Tournament this year that took place over the month of June and July.  Nine teams entered and played full round robin matches, which allowed for more time on court and did not interfere with weekend tennis.  The contests were heated, but in the end, the top two teams emerged:  Mike Levitt / Carlos Dunkerly with a single loss and Brandon Boyce / Andrew Horen, with an undefeated round robin record.  The finals took place on a hot, but breezy Monday in July on court 1.  The players came out, all looking focused and ready.  Brandon and Andrew the young guns and Mike and Carlos, the well-known experienced players of Mcc who have played together and given us countless exciting matches over the years.
Andrew and Brandon won the toss and elected to serve.  Mike and Carlos broke immediately then solidified the break.  However, Brandon and Andrew held and broke and on it went through the first set.  In the last game of the set, down 5-6, Mike served big to hold at thirty and force a tie-breaker.  The points became extended as players probed for an opening and avoided the dreaded unforced errors.  The score was 4-4 with Andrew serving.  Carlos hit one of his wicked cross-court forehands that forced the error and they had the mini-break with Mike serving the next two points.  At 5-4 in the tie-breaker, a long cross-court rally ensued, then a short lob came up and Carlos dunked it away to give them set points.  Mike hit an excellent first serve that got to Brandon’s backhand which clipped the tape and gave Mike and Carols the first set 7-6 (4).

In the second set, you could see that Mike and Carlos wanted to avoid the typical letdown a team has after squeezing out a very close set.  Andrew and Brandon pressed, making the games close, but Mike and Carlos managed to hold then break to open the set.  With Carlos serving into the sun, a long deuce game ensued, but Carlos kept his first serve percentage high, and they fought off break points, using the wind with lobs and deft volleys to finally hold and build a 3-0 lead.  Andrew attacked every return with his backhand, hitting heavy shots on the return and Brandon did the same, playing aggressive tennis, however, the lead proved too much as Carlos and Mike played quality, percentage tennis to close out the match on their fifth match point, 6-1.
Great tournament and a wonderful final.  Thanks to all the brave participants who put their games out there for the world to see.  Pressure is a privilege, that makes you a better player.  See you at the next tourney!
