This year’s Mixed Doubles tournament was very well attended with a total of sixteen teams participating in two divisions, Silver & Gold. In the Silver Division, the finals featured newcomers, Jennifer and David Hubka who played against veteran Mcc tournament player, Elliot Nache and his newcomer partner, Karely Deal. In the round robin, Elliot and Karely edged out David and Jennifer in an eight-game pro-set with a score of 8-4. In the final, team Hubka stepped up their level, putting more pressure on Elliot and Karely with deep shots and more aggressive net play to out duel them in the end, 6-4, 6-2. Congrats to David and Jennifer for their first Silver Division title.
In the Gold Division, the defending champs, Karen Berliner and Raul Hernandez made the semis, but came up against a tough team in Mike Levitt and Nancy Closson. Mike and Nancy came to play despite windy conditions and delayed play due to overnight rain. They jumped on top quickly and rode the wave all the way to a convincing 8-3 victory to reach the finals once again. In the second semi-final, Donna Leventhal and Robert Rudelius imposed themselves on Karen Dixon and Marv Benson, with Robert chipping and charging and Donna serving big to take the win 8-2. In the finals, both sets started out the same way, Robert and Donna jumped on top with an early break to go up 3-1, then Nancy and Mike would fight back, getting through tough deuce games to even the match at 3-3. The match started slow, with a lot of errors as the players adjusted to the wind, however, as the match went on, the points heated up, with long cross-court rallies between Mike and Donna, with Robert and Nancy looking to poach, but having difficulty finding an opening. In the end, both sets were decided by a few big points in the last three games and in this case, they all went to the slightly more aggressive team of Leventhal and Rudelius, as they closed out each set with a three-game run to win 6-3, 6-3 in a very entertaining final.
In the consolation final, Danielle and Brandon Boyce showed why they are a formidable team as they started slow, falling behind 1-3, but they started to impose themselves with finely placed serves and wise net play. In the end, they showed great poise and came back to win seven games in a row against a strong team in Costanza Guerrini and Massoud Djabbari to win the third place award 8-3.
Congrats to all the players who competed well in a very challenging draw. Thank you to Priscilla, Brenda, and all the staff who helped get the courts dry and ready for play after overnight rain. Also, special thanks to all who came out to spectate and support our efforts to make Mcc the best tennis club in West LA! See you at our next event.
